  • What Is Trenchless Technology?

Trenchless technology is a modern approach towards the renewal of underground sewer pipelining with no or minimal excavation and surface disruption. Trenchless technology is not a new technology it has been around for over 12 years but in just recent time has gained popularity due to its cost effectiveness and earth friendly approach to our failing infrastructure worldwide.

Will Homeowners Insurance Pay For Trenchless Repair?

Homeowners' insurance policies generally exclude sewer line replacements needed due to damage caused by gradual wear and tear.

How Much Does Trenchless Repair Cost?

Great question! Let’s compare the costs of the traditional “dig” method and the trenchless option.

    • The traditional dig and replace method requires excavating a long, deep trench or trenches to remove the old pipes and install new ones. This method can cost $50-$250 or more a foot, depending on the length and depth of the existing pipes. Replacing an average sewer line from the house to where it connects to the public sewer system typically costs $3,000-$6,000

    • Trenchless sewer replacement uses minimal digging. Expect to pay about $60-$200 per foot, or $3,500-$20,000 for an average household sewer line. The trenchless slip-lining method or relining typically cost $80-$250 or more a foot, or $4,000-$25,000 or more for a typical household sewer.

      • Cured-In-Place-Pipe (CIPP) is a trenchless method to repair existing pipelines of all sizes and shapes. This less invasive repair process is used to rehabilitate sewer, water, gas and chemical pipelines.

Using a resin-impregnated felt liner; it is then inverted into the problem pipe using air or water inversion through an access point. Using air or water pressure, the resin-impregnated liner is pushed through the pipeline and pressed against the walls of the problem pipe. Liners can then cure ambient or use hot water or steam to cure. Depending on curing methods, this process can take anywhere from 40 minutes to 4 hours. After the curing process, the liner forms to the pipe, making it a tight-fight, joint less, water and corrosion proof replacement pipe. The previous pipe serves as a protective barrier for the replacement pipe. Thus, a pipe with in a pipe! During this trenchless process, little to no digging is required – making this method of repair less disruptive and more cost-effective than the traditional "Dig and Replace" repair methods.

    EPOXY PIPELINING

These are methods of lining pipes with a thin lining of resin (typically 1mm thick), which is sprayed onto the surface of a cleaned main. The aim of these techniques is to isolate the host pipe from the conveyed medium. There may be some potential for these techniques to be used to reinforce the structural capabilities of the host main.

    MANHOLE REHABILITATION

The vacuum powered, resin-impregnated liner is inverted manually into the manhole and uses an inflation device to press the liner against the existing manhole wall. This contact allows for the liner to form to the shape of the manhole. During this process excess resin migrates into imperfections, where the liner is sealed and mechanically held in place.

    PIPE PROBLEMS

It is not probable that homeowners in urban communities will often be troubled with frozen pipes unless they go away for several weeks and leave their home unheated during a protracted spell of freezing weather. If you are contemplating such an absence, the water should be shut off and pipes drained. But, if you should find a frozen pipe, certain steps are advisable.

    BURST PIPES

Since water always wins, prevention is the best medicine, which means taking simple but effective action to make sure your pipes don't freeze and, ultimately, burst. A poorly insulated house can actually protect pipes in a sense, because the conditioned air inside the house keeps the wall cavity above from freezing. But when it gets really cold, the weather wins and the water in the pipes starts to freeze. If you don't catch it in time, that's all she wrote.
